Blues Workshop

You'll hear the bass thumping down E Colden Ave long before you actually spot the Blues Workshop door. It's a low-slung building right off the sidewalk in South LA, and the sidewalk line moves at whatever pace the bouncer feels like setting. You don't get any fancy VIP treatment here. Security checks IDs slow and thorough, and you'll hand over a cover charge in cash before squeezing past the heavy curtain into the main room.

The interior smells like floor cleaner and old wood, with sticky tables lining the back wall. It's dark, loud, and packed tight with people who actually came to watch the band play. The stage is barely knee-high, meaning guitar necks practically brush against the front row. There isn't any fancy craft cocktail menu. You walk up to the bar, grab a tall can of beer, and find a tiny patch of floor where nobody's spilling their drink.

Midway through the set, the AC starts rattling against the wall, but nobody cares because the blues guitar solo cuts right through the noise. When the house lights finally flash at the end of the night, everyone stumbles out onto the quiet street while cars zoom past on the avenue.
